In Mohammedan culture and religion the scared and Holy word “Islam” means resigned unconditional submission to the will of Almighty God.

The popularity of names Iskandar, Ibrahim, Ismail, Mariam showed the evidence of close contact of Mohammedans with Greek and Jewish culture.

As such in the field of medicine the principle of practice Greek influences were predominated yet the Saracens themselves were the originator not only of Algebra, chemistry and geology but many improvements and refinements of civilization both in personal hygienic customs and public measures.

The true starting point of Mohammedans medicine was made by establishing the famous school “Gondisapor”.

The greatest physicians Rhazes, Haly Abbas an Ibn Sina (Avicenna).

Haly Ben Abbas, a Persian who died in 994 was the author of the Al Malki (royal book) which was a great treatise and guide in medicine for a hundred years which was later in superseded by the Canon of Avicenna.

It was translated into Latin at about 1070-80. It contains a description of small pox and “Persian fire (malignant anthrax).

Ibn Sina (980) was called as the “Prince of Physician.” His wonderful description of the origin of mountains entitled him to be called as father of Geology and it is interesting to note that two physician widely separated in space and time – Avicenna and Fracastorius are the only writers who contributed anything of value to the science.

Canon, a treatise was a huge store house of learning, in which the author attempted to codify the whole medical knowledge of his time.

He was said to have been the first to describe the preparation and properties of sulphuric acid and alcohol. He gave a good description of Gunea-worm.

Rhazes (860-932) was a great clinician. His description of small pox, measles was the first authentic accounts in literature. He had a great encyclopedia of medicine known as El Haw.
